Moche vs. Chavin
The Moche and Chavin civilizations were similar in many ways. They both developed near the coast and near rivers making fishing and farming a major part of their economy. Both had methods of irrigating crops that involved canals. Both followed a polytheistic religion. Their artwork was also similar. They specialized in pottery, textiles, and gold crafts.
However, the major difference between the two was that the Chavín were much more peaceful than the Moche. Moche settlements tended to be ruled by warriors, and their gods appeared more brutal. Their practice of human sacrifice on prisoners of war was something that distinctively separated them from the Chavín. The Chavín believed in animal spirits, most of their gods being depicted as feline. Their religious beliefs were centered on transformation instead of sacrifice.
